Hats off to cfree; I'd say you could fill a response on this thread w lyrics from Workingman's and AmBeaty. Then, if we all voted on the top 25 of all time, from ANY album, the 25 would ALL be from those two...OK, okay--maybe a chance for a couple from WotFlood and Euro72, but no chance for anything else (sorry, Terrapin fans).

Hmm, OK # 2, maybe StSt...

Hey Tell,

"Did he doubt or did he try?
Answers aplenty in the bye and bye
Talk about your plenty and talk about your ills
One man gathers what another man spills"

Hunter sits in with Garcia Band

Also LOVE this:

"There were days
and there were days
and there were days I know
when all we ever wanted
was to learn and love and grow"

this one really gets me...

Hearts of Summer held in trust
Still tender, young and green
Left on shelves collecting dust
Not knowing what they mean
Valentines of flesh and blood
Still tender, young and green
Hoping love would not forsake
The days that lie between lie between

in particular the way it was delivered on this most splendid show- my final one.

The world grows dark and mean...preach it brother.

COLD RAIN 108

How about some lines from a Hunter tune
that just screams PIGPEN
Lyrics:Robert Hunter
Music: Robert Hunter

ONE THING TO TRY
Break out your bottle, be in trouble by noon
Never get satisfaction 'cause you boil too soon
Them downtown chippies know your weight to the ounce
But the harder you fall, Jack, the higher you bounce
--------------------------
But if you're in a hurry, and really got to go
If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow
That it's one thing to try and another to fly
You get there quicker just a step at a time
It's one thing to bark, another to bite
The show ain't over till you pack up at night
---------------------------------------------------
Out of ninety-nine people all running around
Not one in a hundred got his feet on the ground
You find one in a thousand holding some in reserve
For when the real true action comes around the curve
-------------------------------------------------
Take care of your people, get some of them fed
Hide the ones in trouble out under your bed
Keep an eye to the future, an ear to the past
After thinking it over, notice nothing much lasts
---------------------------------------------------
Don't ever let it get the best of you
Plan what you can, and let the rest shine through
Just so many angles you can possibly see
Figure on those, let the other ones be
----------------------------------------------------
Don't be out collecting more than you need
Got a lot of things growing but keep watching those seeds
Got to share in December what you planted in May
If the harvest is empty, find some other good way
ROBERT HUNTER!

What, no love for

"Let my inspiration flow
in token lines suggesting rhythm
that will not forsake me
till my tale is told and done"?

It broadly sums up Hunter's writing for the band pretty well I think.
